Since hypernuclei are unique laboratories for investigations of the interaction between hyperons and nucleons and even among hyperons a unified description of baryonic inmedium interactions is an important requirement. Unfortunately the application of DiracBrueckner theory to medium and high mass nuclei is technically not feasible. A rather satisfactory approach providing a practicable way to use microscopically deduced meson exchange interactions is the density dependent relativistic hadron (DDRH) field theory [1]. This theory has been successfully applied to isospin nuclei and was thus considered to be an excellent basis for our hypernuclear studies.

We re-examine the puzzling π emission from the weak decay of 4ΛHe and propose an explanation in terms of a three–body decay of the virtual Σ. Such a resolution of the π decay puzzle is consistent with the calculated Σ probability in light Λ hypernuclei as well as the experimentally observed π energy spectrum and s–wave angular distribution.
